Trailer Hardware — what to source for the Irish trade

Trailer hardware for the Irish coffee + food trailer trade covers spare parts, tow couplings, tyres, lights, hatches + serving windows, locks, water tanks (potable + waste), gas locker fittings, jockey wheels, axle parts, and the entire mechanical + electrical infrastructure that keeps a trailer roadworthy + festival-ready. Most Irish operators source through 3-4 major trailer parts dealers (Indespension Ireland, Trailer Solutions, Ifor Williams parts agents, Knott-Avonride distributors) plus local agricultural co-ops for cheaper bulk items.

Tyres, axles, hubs + brakes

Trailer tyres should be checked + replaced every 5-7 years regardless of tread (UV degradation matters more than wear on low-mileage trailers). Common Irish trade sizes: 145R10, 165R13, 195R14, 235/65R16. Brands: Avon Tyres, Maxxis, Kenda, BKT (agricultural), Continental (premium). Expect €60-€140 per tyre. Brake servicing (Knott-Avonride, AL-KO, Indespension) every 5,000 km or annually whichever first; pads + drums €150-€350 fitted per axle. Wheel bearings + hubs €80-€200 per side. CVRT-eligible trailers (>3,500 kg GVW) need annual roadworthiness inspection.

Tow couplings, hitches, kingpin locks

Standard Irish trade: 50mm tow ball coupling (AL-KO AKS series) for trailers <3,500 kg GVW, and eye couplings for larger commercial. Stabiliser couplings (AKS 3004, AKS 3504) reduce sway on motorways at €350-€600 fitted. Kingpin locks for unattached parking (€80-€150) deter casual theft — a major risk for parked food trailers in Dublin, Cork, Galway. Wheel clamps (Stronghold, Bulldog) add a secondary layer at €60-€120. NCT/CVRT inspectors check coupling condition + chain integrity at every inspection.

Hatches, serving windows, doors

Aluminium fold-down hatches (gas-strut + locking) are the standard service-window solution on Irish food + coffee trailers. UK + Polish builders supply most stock — expect €350-€800 for a 1m × 0.6m hatch with service-counter folding tray. Stable doors for kitchen access typically run €450-€900. Sliding glass serving windows (Dometic, Bailey caravan parts adapted) are common on coffee trailers + horsebox conversions at €250-€600. Custom builds are common in Ireland — a Dublin / Cork / Limerick fabrication shop will spec hatches + windows to fit existing trailer cutouts.

Water tanks, plumbing, waste

Food-grade potable water tanks (50-150 litres typical for Irish trailers) cost €80-€220 — VicTanks, CAK Tanks, Indespension agricultural. Waste-water tanks slightly cheaper at €60-€180. Plumbing must use food-grade John Guest fittings + WRAS-approved hose; cost €4-€8 per metre. Hand-wash basin with hot water at >38°C is mandatory under FSAI regulations — most Irish trailers run a 6-12L Truma or Whale gas water heater at €350-€700. EHO inspections check tank capacity + plumbing material at first registration.

Lighting + electrics

Trailer road lighting (12V LED brake + indicator + reversing) typically €60-€150 per cluster. Internal LED kitchen lighting (12V/24V strips, 5000-6500K cold white for food prep) €15-€40 per metre. Battery banks: lead-acid leisure (Numax, Trojan) for budget, LiFePO4 (Renogy, Battle Born) for serious off-grid setups at €600-€2,500 per 100Ah. Inverters (1000W-3000W pure sine wave) €200-€700. All electrical work should be done by a RECI/Safe Electric registered electrician for insurance compliance.

Counties served

Trailer hardware suppliers on Food Trailers Marketplace serve all 32 counties. Indespension Ireland, Knott-Avonride distributors, and AL-KO agents have national next-day delivery on most parts; Ifor Williams replacement parts ship from Dublin or via UK depot. Most Irish trailer operators establish a relationship with one or two builders for routine service + a parts wholesaler for stocked items.
